Do You Still Not Understand?

Do you still not understand?

I love it when Jesus shows us the disciples weren’t always the sharpest tools in the shed. Really, I love it. If these guys could be a bunch of idiots from time to time, then there’s hope for me….there’s hope for all of us.

Mark 8
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
16They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,” they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”
21He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Let me give a quick summary of what he’s done so far.
He’s turned water into wine, healed MANY crowds of people at this point that include leprosy, paralytics, and shriveled hands. He’s cast out demons, walked on water, and calmed the storm…crowds are following him into the wilderness to watch him heal and listen to his words. He has already taken 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish and fed 5,000 men (along with their families)…and then he feeds 4,000 men (along with their families)…
…and now this story takes place.

He’s in the middle of teaching them a spiritual truth…how a little thing, yeast is like a little pride or arrogance that can work through a man, through a society, and turn it. In trying to teach them something, he uses the symbol of yeast which is used to make bread…which OBVIOUSLY leads someone to remember that they forgot to bring lunch.
And they start to talk about it.

Can you see the disciples as a bunch of teenage boys, slouched in their chairs half listening to a teacher? You know, not quite the brightest group? We’ve all got a picture of them in our heads, right?

Got it Jesus…don’t be careless with yeast…which makes bread…bread…Dang, did you bring the lunch? I didn’t.
What? We don’t have food?
Forget us, look at all these people around us…what are they going to eat?
The discussion leads to an “argument” in one translation.

And Jesus,
God incarnate,
realizes that he has lost their attention
….to an argument about lunch.

It’s funny to me because to me it seems like Jesus has this “God please help me, I’m surrounded by idiots” feeling.
…and then He let’s them have it.

Are you dense? Are you blind? What is wrong with your heart?
He then walks them through a miracle that JUST happened concerning food. Can you see them answering like kids trying to connect the mental dots in this moment?

Jesus says,
19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,” they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”
21He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

These are his chosen 12! These are his boys! His A team that are living day in and day out with the son of God. They’ve watched miracle after miracle after miracle…and yet they miss the point. If THESE guys can be this dense and not get kicked out of the club?

….then there’s hope for me still.
